Editorial Reviews

Editorial Review
Children are endlessly taking things apart and putting them together, only to pull them apart again. This ageless game is capitalized upon by the award-winning Geometric Sorting Board. It focuses on attention-getting, easily grasped shapes that come in four colors. The challenge is to find which shape fits on which set of pegs. The circles have one hole, the rectangles two, the triangles three, and the squares four. They are perfectly sized to fit on a finger, too. Making different color patterns, counting, or stating the color before putting it on the 7-inch square wood base adds interest as your child develops a skill. Note: Winner of the Good Toy Award from Parent magazine. --Lynne Sampson

Amazon.com Teacher Review
Color, shape, and number are all part of the curriculum for this prize-winning wooden sorting board by Plan. Toddlers and preschoolers will find the painted wooden shapes easy to grasp and manipulate. Rotating the shapes and fitting them onto the pegs will enhance fine motor development. Matching the holes in each shape to the corresponding pegs, children will be able to sort by number and shape (circles have one hole; rectangles two; triangles three; and squares four). Or they can use the solitary peg (or no pegs at all) to sort by color. All shapes except for the circle can be fitted onto random pegs, one or two holes at a time, so they're conducive to all sorts of imaginative play. As visual and motor coordination improve, children may want to rotate the shapes so they can balance and stack them on top of the pegs. --Louise Carter earned her Ph.D. in Child Development from the University of Minnesota and has taught at preschool, elementary, and college levels.

5Possibly the most fun of the shape sorters.
By A Customer
Don't adhere too closely to the age guide on this one. A younger toddler can begin a process of discovery by simply trying to place the shapes on the pegs. (Most of the shapes will fit only on the correct pegs) With a little parental guidance toddlers can see and feel that the two holes fit on the two pegs. Once they grasp that concept they really can take off. Even if everything isn't quite "right" by adult standards, it is still fun and if put away for a week or so, skills will invariably improve with each additional play session. The skills learned on this game seem to transfer remarkably well to other activities.

5Beautifully crafted learning toy
By A Customer
Great for sorting, development of small motor skills, and shape and color recognition. This is a wonderful, open-ended toy. Beautifully made and sturdy. Ours has been with us through three kids and 6 years and still looks as good as ever. I wish more companies put as much thought into their toys. Plan Toys makes some of the best toys you can buy and they are reasonably priced if you consider how long they'll last.

3Nice, non-toxic product - not made in China - but with a loose peg
By Robert Petkus
Two stars were deducted because one of the pegs fell out which required a re-gluing. Otherwise, this product, like all other Plan Toys' products, uses replenishable rubber tree wood and vegetable dyes for coloring, and is smooth and well-machined -- good for the little one who sticks everything in her mouth. On the same token, the loose peg was small enough to pose a serious choking hazard and I always make a habit of regularly inspecting this toy -- something I should do with all toys anyway.
